In 1987 four young women from the Rio Grande Valley had a vision while attending Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. Their vision was to create something so special and unique that it would leave a legacy for others who followed. That vision became Kappa Delta Chi. The Founders are Cynthia Garza-Fleitman, Nellie Flores-Ledesma, Irene Montoya & Melissa Montoya. With the strong foundations of service, Christianity and friendship, they created a sisterhood that 20 years later is stronger than ever. Kappa Delta Chi was officially established on April 6, 1987, our founding date, and is considered the largest Latina based sorority in the Southwest United States. Kappa Delta Chi became a nationally recognized sorority with the induction of the first chapter outside of Texas in 1991. Over the years, Kappa Delta Chi has grown to include women of various ethnicities and cultures and has inducted other chapters throughout the country. All with the common premise of joining Kappa Delta Chi because of the scholastic, philanthropic, and ethical standards that it cultivates and encourages. These are the standards that we emanate through sisterly friendship and servitude to each other and to those around us. Kappa Delta Chi is a member organization of the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, known as NALFO. As the result of our sisterhood’s diligent work and determination, Kappa Delta Chi was recognized as a service-based, nonprofit corporation by the State of Texas on September 25, 1997. Subsequently, our sisterhood has become known as Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc. You can visit our National Organization at www.kappadeltachi.org.
In early 1992, Naomi Vasquez-Chapa, Patricia Banuelos and Jerra Villesca saw a need to bring a Hispanic women’s organization to The University of Texas Arlington campus. At that time there were no sororities on campus that were geared towards the Latina population at UTA. Their idea was to bring the first Hispanic based sorority to UTA. Their journey led them to Kappa Delta Chi. At the time, there were four established chapters of Kappa Delta Chi, the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta Chapters, they realized that Kappa Delta Chi displayed the values that they were seeking. Naomi, Patricia and Jerra contacted Texas Tech’s Dean of Students on January 29, 1992 to inquire how to start a chapter of Kappa Delta Chi at UTA. Once they received the information they needed to start a chapter, they proceeded to establish official organizational status at UTA. During the next few months they recruited other interested ladies who shared their vision. On April 23, 1992, Kappa Delta Chi was recognized as an official organization at UTA. Over the next several months, the charter members continued to learn about Kappa Delta Chi and completed the requirements for a new chapter. On September 6, 1992, the Epsilon Chapter was inducted into Kappa Delta Chi by Rebecca Aleman, Norma Madrid and Lisa Rascon of the Alpha Chapter. A weekend of learning and sharing evolved into a bond of sisterhood and the Epsilon chapter was established.
